Spring 2009 (Boston University Paris Internship Program)

For the spring term of my junior year, I studied in Paris, France. For the first half of the term, I took CAS FR 304, CAS EC 361, and CAS LF 469. After a term break that found me in Pisa, Florence and Rome, I interned with AFS: Vivre Sans Frontière (the French branch of the New York-based American Field Service), and completed a Rapport de Stage for CAS PO/IR 455. Along with completing other projects and tasks (such as translating documents and helping to lead an orientation for departing Canadian students), I updated and edited a preparatory guide to France for foreign students (in English), and updated and reformatted a hosting guide (in French) for host families. All coursework was completed in French.

CAS EC 361 - Economic Development of Europe: From Economic to Political Union
CAS FR 304 - Travaux Pratiques
CAS LF 469 - New French Identities: Immigration and Citizenship
CAS PO/IR 455 - Internship in International Organization Abroad
Internship with AFS: Vivre Sans Frontière

Fall 2008 (School for International Training Program)

For the fall term of my junior year, I studied in Cape Town, South Africa. Combined with four homestays (a month with a family in Langa, the first black township in South Africa; a week in Tshabo with an isiXhosa-dominant  rural, "black" family ; a week in Stellenbosch with an Afrikaans-speaking, "white" family; and a week in the Bo Kaap with a Muslim, "coloured" family), the programme also brought us to such areas as Durban (during the week we focused on "Indian" identity), and our combined experiences honed in on South Africa, within the context of multiculturalism and social change. During the first month of the programme, we took XHOS 1000, AFRS 3000, and ANTH 3500; we continued with the latter two after the first month. The last portion of the programme focused on ISPR 3000. My particular ISP allowed me to travel to Bloemfontein, Pretoria and Johannesburg, as my ISP focused on monolingualism in the multicultural areas of each of South Africa's five archdioceses, within the context of the new changes to the English Missal.

AFRS 3000 - Multiculturalism and Social Change Seminar
ANTH 3500 - Field Study Seminar
ISPR 3000 - Independent Study Project
XHOS 1000  - Intensive Language Study: Xhosa
